Washburn baseball closes out regular season this week

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Ichabods will close out the regular season at home this weekend.

Washburn baseball is coming off a Turnpike Tussle series win this past weekend to improve to 20-17 overall and 16-17 in the MIAA.

“I think it’s a huge lift for us because you know in order for us to get where we want to get, we’ve got to win the tournament,” Washburn baseball head coach Harley Douglas said. “That’s our goal, and that’s what we wanted to do. Play our best at the end of the year.”

“You know, recently we’ve shown that we can play with anybody.” Washburn right-handed pitcher Maclane Finley said. “You know, if we just keep playing the game we’ve been playing and we just put it together for nine innings, I have no doubt we will walk away with a series win on Saturday.”

The Ichabods will have a true test in No. 5 Pittsburg State, as the Gorillas lead the MIAA in batting average with a .357 as well as an on-base percentage of .478. Pitt State has scored 536 runs this season compared to Washburn’s 480.

Washburn is batting .292 as a team right now, with one of the best hitters in the conference being Manhattan’s own Ian Luce. The junior outfielder is batting .412 on the season, totaling 82 hits and 46 RBI.

Game 1 against Pitt State is set for Thursday at 4 p.m.
