The Washington Huskies lost 5-4 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers after a rain delay. Despite a strong fifth inning, Minnesota rallied in the seventh to secure the victory.
In a game that was delayed by four hours due to rain and lightning, the Washington Huskies saw a late lead slip away in a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the rubber match between the two teams.
After the Huskies put together three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of first baseman Landon Young, catcher Colton Bower tacked on an RBI bunt single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to give coach Eddie Smith's team a two-run cushion going into the bottom of the frame. However, that wasn't enough.
With Gunnar Nichols on the mound, second baseman Jack Mosh brought the Golden Gophers within a run with an RBI single, before third baseman Davis Hamilton twisted the knife with a two-run double to give Minnesota the lead for good.
Joe Sperry earned the win for the Golden Gophers after working 3 innings in relief, letting up a run on 3 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in the process. Adam Urban slammed the door to earn the save after striking out 3 batters over the final two frames.
Nichols, who relieved starter Hayden Lewis after the rain delay, took the loss. He let up 4 runs on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, as the Huskies moved to 3-2 in series against Big Ten teams.
With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 16-20 on the year and 7-8 in conference play. They'll return home and get back into action on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. PT at a neutral site in Bellevue against Seattle University.
