The Washington Huskies had a slow start to the week after being swept by the Gonzaga Bulldogs, dropping the second game of their brief series with their in-state foes 8-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
Coach Eddie Smith's team jumped out to an early 4-1 lead behind a two-run double from center fielder Mic Paul in the first inning and a two-run home run from catcher Colton Bower in the third. However, Washington ran into an offensive rut after that as the Bulldogs stormed back behind the efforts of Mikey Bell.
The Gonzaga third baseman went 3-for-5 in the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning and a run scored. He also drove in a run after grounding into a double play in the sixth inning to knot the game up at 4-4. The Huskies retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh when third baseman Blake Wilson drew a bases-loaded walk, but things fell apart in the top of the eighth.
Reliever Bryce Johnson, who took the loss in the contest, struggled in the eighth. He was only able to record one out in the frame as he let up 4 runs on 5 hits with a strikeout over 1 1/3 innings, as designated hitter Maddox Haley twisted the knife with a two-run double off of Gunnar Nichols.
Garrett Gores earned the win for the Bulldogs, his first of the year, after working 3 scoreless innings in relief. The Huskies were able to muster a ton of traffic off him with 4 walks and a hit, but they weren't able to come through in the clutch.
The Huskies fell to 15-18 with the loss, and next, they'll travel to Minnesota to kick off a three-game series with the Golden Gophers on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. PT.
