The Washington Huskies achieved their fifth Big Ten sweep with a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers, led by ace Morgan Reimer's complete game performance and Giselle Alvarez's standout hitting. This win marks Reimer's nation-leading 22nd victory of the season.
In what has become a pattern for coach Heather Tarr's team, the Washington Huskies pulled off another sweep of a Big Ten opponent after a 6-1 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Sunday afternoon.
After she let up a run-scoring double to shortstop Tara Wolocko in the top of the first inning, ace Morgan Reimer settled in nicely. The Canadian sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing just the unearned run on 9 hits with 5 strikeouts en route to her nation-leading 22nd win.
Reimer also got plenty of help from Washington's offense, as the Huskies put together 12 hits in the win, led by third baseman Giselle Alvarez. The junior went 3-for-4 on the day with a pair of runs batted in on a double in the first inning to tie the game, before a single in the third doubled the UW lead.
The Huskies also got contributions from star first baseman Alexis DeBoer, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI single to give Washington the lead before she came around to score later in the inning on an RBI double off the bat of catcher Jadyn Glab. Left fielder Ava Carroll and shortstop Melody Acevedo also added RBI singles in the contest as the Huskies sit in third in the conference with 316 runs scored.
Natalie Susa took the loss for the Golden Gophers and dropped to 0-7 on the year after lasting just 1 2/3 innings and letting up 4 runs on 5 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 34-9 on the year and remained perfect in Big Ten play at 15-0. Next, they'll head south for a three-game series with their arch-rivals, the Oregon Ducks, which is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. PT.
