Washington continues to pursue Chaz Gray, a 6-foot-4 edge rusher from New Jersey, who is ranked No. 9 in his state and No. 32 nationally for the 2027 class. After receiving over two dozen offers, including from Clemson and Penn State, Gray remains a key target for the Huskies.

Washington was the first school to offer St. Joseph Regional edge Chaz Gray last January and remains squarely in focus for his recruitment.
Gray, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound outside linebacker from Montvale, New Jersey, received a visit from linebackers coach Brian Odom on Friday. The three-star Garden State prospect, per 247Sports' rankings, is the No. 9-ranked prospect from the state of New Jersey and the No. 32 edge recruit in the 2027 class by 247Sports.
The coveted defender has added over two dozen offers since UW became his first offer last year, including recent offers from Clemson, Penn State, and Tennessee, while South Carolina got the most recent unofficial visit from Gray on April 9.
With the Huskies' increased efforts in recruiting New Jersey since Jedd Fisch took over as head coach in January 2024, over 20 prospects from the state have received offers from the Big Ten school to date over the past 27 months.
Given that UW was his first scholarship offer and Odom made a visit this week all the way out to New Jersey, it's fair to expect the program could be in a position to get an official visit from the talented pass-rusher. With the increase in the number of official visits recruits can take, previously, it would be unlikely to be one of five schools to get a player out to Seattle from the East Coast.
Now, things are different.
Over the past two years for St. Joseph Regional, Gray has racked up 70 total tackles (20 solo), 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in 18 games between his sophomore and junior seasons.
Ironically, if UW is able to secure Gray when all is said and done, there won't be any bad history between the edge and freshman quarterback Derek Zammit, a former four-star quarterback at DePaul Catholic, since Gray never managed to sack his potential future teammate in the two seasons they faced off against each other.
On tape, Gray shows high football IQ with an ability to impact opposing offenses both against the run and pass. He possesses ideal size on the edge as a hand-in-the-dirt pass rusher, though he has the frame to add more weight in the coming years once he gets in a college weight program.
