The Washington Huskies suffered their first loss in Big Ten play, falling 8-4 to the No. 17 Oregon Ducks. Despite a comeback attempt, the Huskies couldn't maintain their lead after a rough sixth inning.
The Washington Huskies are perfect no longer in Big Ten play after an 8-4 loss to the No. 17 Oregon Ducks on the road on Friday night.
After falling behind 3-0 early due to a two-run home run off the bat of catcher Emma Cox in the first inning and a run-scoring single from left fielder Amari Harper in the third inning, coach Heather Tarr's team came roaring back in the sixth. Junior third baseman Giselle Alvarez blasted a solo home run to tie her for the team lead with 15, before freshman shortstop Melody Acevedo ripped a double into the left-center gap to tie the game.
However, that lead didn't last long as things fell apart in the bottom of the sixth.
Morgan Reimer was unable to make it out of the inning, working 5 2/3 innings and allowing 5 runs on 10 hits in the contest, with 5 strikeouts as she dropped to 22-3 on the year. After Reimer was removed, Arizona transfer Ryan Maddox walked both batters she faced, which included walking in a run, before being lifted for Sophia Ramuno, who surrendered a grand slam to Cox for her second home run of the day to put the game out of reach.
Lyndsey Grein earned the win for Oregon, her 22nd of the year, to move her into a tie with Reimer for No. 2 nationally in the category after letting up 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts in a complete game.
With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 34-10 on the season and 15-1 in Big Ten play. The arch-rivals will return to the diamond for the second installment of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. PT.
