A grand slam. Two more home runs. Three walks. Nineteen batters total.
All of this was wrapped up into a second inning that last 40 minutes Friday during the College Station Regional opener between Texas A&M softball and UConn. In the second frame of the 17-3 win, the Aggies batted through the lineup twice, and then some, while scoring a record 13 runs. Ten of those runs came with two outs.
"WE'RE GOING TO RUN OUT OF BUBBLES, FOLKS!" an Aggies softball social media page posted, alluding the tradition of blowing bubbles for each home run.
The 13 runs score the most inning in an inning in Aggies softball history. It's the second-most in an inning in NCAA softball regional history. The first five batters of the inning reached, including a fielder's choice. A couple passed balls helped A&M jump out to a 3-0 lead, but UConn actually recorded two outs by then. After Paislie Allen scored on another passed ball, the bases were clear and it looked like the Huskies might escape disaster.
Then A&M (37-17), in football terms, scored a touchdown, extra point and field goal.
The big blow was a grand slam by Ariel Kowalewski. That caused the second pitching change of the frame. Kelsey Mathis, batting for the second time in the frame, followed with a home run before KK Dement did the same.
After a single and a walk, UConn (31-27) made its third pitching change of the inning, but Amber Benton could not stop the bleeding. She allowed a single, a hit by pitch and a walk as A&M stretched its lead to 13. A fourth swap in the circle brought out Jess Walter who mercifully struck out Micaela Wark, who was batting for the third time in the inning. That was A&M's only strikeout of the day against 14 hits and four walks.
Texas A&M hit three home runs, including a grand slam, during the game against UConn.
The final score was Texas A&M 17, UConn 3.
