WBAL-TV 11 announced Wednesday morning that longtime sports anchor Pete Gilbert will succeed Gerry Sandusky as the stationās sports director.
āWBAL-TV 11 Sports Director is a position defined by history and prestige, and I am deeply honored to step into this role,ā Gilbert wrote in a statement released by WBAL. āI am especially grateful to Gerry Sandusky for his mentorship over the past three decades. From the Ravens and the Orioles to college and high school athletics, sports have a unique way of bringing our communities together. Itās a privilege to share those stories with our viewers every day.ā
Gilbert, a Damascus native, first joined WBAL in 1995 as an intern out of St. Lawrence University. One year later, he debuted on air at KECI in Montana as the weekend sports anchor. Gilbert enjoyed stops as a sports reporter at KHBS-KHOG in Arkansas, then WGAL in Pennsylvania before returning to Baltimore in 2004.
He has a lengthy resume of Ravens and Orioles coverage as well as three National Sports Media Association Maryland Sportscaster of the Year awards.
Sandusky, who also served as the voice of the Ravens since 2006, retired after a four-plus-decade career earlier this month.
