Anthony Edwards is recovering from a knee injury and could return during the Timberwolves' second-round series against the Spurs. His medical team estimates a recovery time of one to two weeks, increasing hopes for his participation.
Anthony Edwards provided more insight into his recovery from a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee in his most recent video released on his YouTube channel on Sunday.
In the video, David Hines â the Timberwolves vice president of medical operations and performance â notes Edwardsâ timetable is âone to two weeks.â Whether thatâs from the point of Edwardsâ injury, likely a slightly more recent date, isnât clear, but it does increase the likelihood of an Edwardsâ return at some point in Minnesotaâs second-round series with San Antonio. The guard has been witnessed shooting in the gym after each of the teamâs practices over the weekend.
The Wolvesâ series opens Monday in Texas. Timberwolves coach Chris Finch noted Saturday that Edwards remains âweek to weekâ and the team wonât have the star guard âout of the gate.â
But Minnesota returns home for Game 3 on Friday, with Game 4 taking place two days after that.
âItâs a collective decision from the athlete, medical performance and coaching. How does Ant look, and obviously how is he feeling within these next couple of weeks?â Hines said. âI think he can return sooner if he can hit all of his metrics for pain management, his mobility, his functional strength, how he looks on the court. But everything is in place for him to follow an order.
âAnd if heâs feeling better sooner, and he can turn the corner sooner, then obviously youâll see Ant return on the court sooner.â
Hines said Edwards is âpretty eliteâ with his recovery and healing. His absences have generally been shorter than the prescribed recovery timelines for the few injuries heâs battled in his career.
âWe call him Wolverine,â Hines said.
Hines said the Wolves use data from the medical side of the organization as well as the performance and strength department when tracking progress and identifying a return date.
âSeeing if he can hit all his high-end speeds and strength metrics for isometric testing and his ability to jump and perform on the court before he returns,â Hines said. âThose are the things we look at, and if heâs not capable of doing those things, we can make sure that weâre managing him and that heâs not progressing too fast before he returns on the court.â
Prior to the Game 4 injury against Denver, Edwards was playing through runners knee in his right knee, which he confirmed in his YouTube video was impacting his play.
âIâm getting by. Itâs (messed) up, but fight through it,â he said after Minnesotaâs Game 2 victory. âItâs kind of hard to gauge my shot, because I canât really bend and jump on my shot, but itâs all good, man. Fight through it, itâs the playoffs. Iâll go out there on one leg if Iâve got to.â
That, in fact, may be required to give it a go in this San Antonio series.
The mere potential for Edwardsâ return is a source of optimism for his teammates preparing to lace âem up as a major underdog on Monday.

âAnytime you can get someone thatâs been hurt back, especially Ant, just the gravity that he carries, even him just being on the court will help us out a lot,â Wolves wing Jaden McDaniels said. âI told him we going to hold it down until he gets ready.â
The caption at the end of the YouTube video reads: âAntman is coming ⊠BELIEVE THAT.â
âObviously, itâd be a huge shot in the arm to get him back. Heâs moving in the right direction, but we still donât know what that really looks like,â Wolves coach Chris Finch told reporters Sunday. âItâs good to have him just around the team again, have his energy back and heâs paying close attention to the gameplan and everything like that, so heâs locking in.â
