McLaren's team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged that a pit-stop decision cost them the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, where they had a chance to win with Lando Norris. The decision to let Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli pit first ultimately allowed him to secure the victory.
A second-place finish is a good result. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella will tell you that much himself. But good and what could have been are two different conversations, and after the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, Stella was having both at once.
Kimi Antonelli won the race for Mercedes, but McLaren had Lando Norris running in front of the championship leader for a significant portion of Sundayâs race. A pit-stop decision under the threat of incoming weather ultimately handed the win back to the Silver Arrows. Stella wasnât afraid of putting his hands up when he spoke to Sky Sports F1 following the race.
âI think you summarise it well. We had an opportunity to win, 100 per cent,â Stella said. âWe were chased by a car that was a little bit faster than us, we were monitoring the weather at the same time and when Kimi pitted his out lap was just mega. We couldnât match it with our performance in the in lap, we lost possibly a little bit of time in the execution. We could have done better but we are very happy. We take all the positives out of this weekend. We are there, there is some new stuff coming for the coming races so exciting time ahead of us.â
McLaren, wary of a weather window, allowed Antonelli to pit first, undercutting the Papaya cars. With Antonelli able to make up a gap on fresher tyres, he was able to dispatch the reigning champion and take the win.

The introduction of a suite of upgrades onto the MCL40 for the first race back after the sportâs enforced April break brought the reigning two-time constructorsâ champions right back into play at the front. Norris, who had not finished higher than fourth in the three Grands Prix and one Sprint before the extended break, won the Sprint on Saturday by 3.8 seconds from Oscar Piastri.
A McLaren one-two in a Sprint format is encouraging. Losing the main event on a strategy call is rather less so. Stella wasnât interested in thinking of this as a disappointment, though. Mercedes entered the Miami round as the leader of the constructorsâ championship, holding 135 points and leading Ferrari by 45, with McLaren a further 45 back.
âWe donât have to forget where we came from. We came from a relatively difficult start of the season. We reacted,â Stella said. âWe always said internally, irrespective of where we are at the start, we know what we are capable of. So I think we have demonstrated [that].
âBig, big thank you to the team for the hard work that led us to delivering all the upgrades in various areas of the car that made us competitive. I think Mercedes still have a little bit of an advantage on us but itâs good to be there and the championship is very long.â
McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull have all looked more capable of challenging early championship leaders Mercedes on pure pace than any of the opening three rounds in March. The MCL40 upgrades passed the sprint test on Saturday. The Grand Prix was close enough that it was actually a strategy that called it. The cars are arguably capable.
More upgrades are coming and the gap to Mercedes is shrinking. A win that slipped away in a Miami pitlane is painful, but this was not a weekend that went wrong, it was a weekend that nearly went perfectly. Thatâs a different kind of problem to have.
