Whether intentional, unintentional or something in between, when Sean McVay appeared grumpy during the Los Angeles Rams press conference on the same night L.A. selected Ty Simpson as the 13th overall pick, it was McVay’s appearance and reaction that became the story as much as the selection.
Was McVay upset about the Simpson pick? Was McVay downplaying his excitement to assure Matthew Stafford from afar that he was/is still L.A.’s quarterback? What events occurred that led to McVay presenting a different body language than we are used to seeing from the generally giddy and optimistic head coach?
According to Chris Simms, McVay was angry about a “volatile” situation that had occurred as there was some sort of disagreement, , or an interaction that led to McVay expressing what appeared to be discomfort and/or agitation the night of Round 1.
Sean McVay's grumpy demeanor was reportedly linked to a volatile situation or disagreement that occurred before the press conference.
The Los Angeles Rams selected Ty Simpson as the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
There is speculation that McVay's grumpy demeanor may have reflected his feelings about the Simpson pick, but the exact reasons remain unclear.

You can see the quote from Simms below, but I am not sure it clears up this mystery, in fact, it may further fuel the already set fire as it’s still not clear what set McVay off.
“The reason he in the press conference was pissed off had neither to do with him acting or the pick but had to do with some sort of volatile situation that happened before they went out there,” Simms said. “There was some little argument about something. He assured me it was nothing like major, but he was a little peed off right there at that moment. That’s what he told me. I don’t think he’d have any problem with me sharing that.”
Unless McVay chooses to share exactly what happened that night, we may never know.
Now, this story doesn’t have to matter if the Rams continue to have success under McVay. More specifically, if McVay and Simpson have some success together, then this story will not matter. Whatever made McVay “grumpy” that evening will likely be irrelevant IF Simpson turns out to be a solid pick for L.A.
Simpson’s success is what will be remembered, not how McVay acted on draft night.
However, if Simpson falters, then you can expect people to recount that grumpy, volatile moment involving McVay, where some speculated whether L.A.’s head coach wanted to pick Simpson at all?
Fair or not, this story isn’t going away, and whereas the Mike Vrabel/Diana Russini story is still getting headlines, the McVay/Simpson “controversy” (or lack thereof?) is one of the biggest storylines post the NFL Draft and going into 2026.
