Arsenal's head coach Renée Slegers insists the team will continue to chase Barclays Women's Super League glory despite trailing Manchester City by 11 points, with three games in hand. The Gunners remain hopeful after Manchester City's recent loss to Brighton.
âWeâll push everything we canâ â Arsenal will keep on chasing WSL glory says Slegers
The Gunnersâ slim title hopes were boosted as league leaders Manchester City were defeated 3-2 by Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. Arsenal trail Manchester City by 11 points but they do have three games in hand on The Cityzens.
When speaking to the media ahead of the midweek fixture against Leicester City, Arsenal boss Slegers said that her side will not be giving up hope on the title.
âOf course, we follow the league because itâs our context,â Slegers said. âWe look at whatâs happening around us. At the same time, weâre so focused on ourselves.
âWe know we have three games in hand. Theyâre all difficult, challenging games. We have to look at what we can do. As long as itâs theoretically possible, weâll push everything we can. Again, that starts with us and what we can do, that starts tomorrow.â
Going on to discuss Leicester City, Slegers is not entirely sure what to expect from The Foxes but she believes that her side will be raring to go.
She said âWe are always strong and thatâs the strength of our squad; the power of our togetherness, the different qualities and the different tools that we have in the squad.
âWe have to start well, we have to finish well and we have to look at what Leicester are going to do. I think itâs a midweek game for them as well, they donât do much of this, so letâs see how they manage, we wonât know until tomorrow. We plan for scenarios and again, I think thatâs been a super-strength of ours, how we start and finish games.â
With a big UEFA Womenâs Champions League semi-final, second leg tie against Lyon on the horizon, Slegers was asked whether she would rotate her squad but she gave little away.
She said âI think thatâs why we built the squad and [I have] full trust in the squad that when these short turnarounds come, everybodyâs ready. I think weâve had a lot of players involved lately, whether thatâs the start or finish and thatâs one of our big strengths in the squad, thatâs the way we want to work.
Renée Slegers stated that Arsenal will keep pushing for the Barclays Women's Super League title until it is no longer mathematically possible.
