JOHNSTOWN, Pa. â This week has been a big one for the top of Brady Gartnerâs head.
Friday, after a 7-0 win over United in the District 6 Class 2A playoffs at Sargentâs Stadium at the Point, the right-handed hurler was given an electric yellow hardhat adorned with the schoolâs athletic logo to wear.
It was a postgame reward to acknowledge his efforts over six innings on the mound where he allowed just two United hits and fanned six batters.
It was the second time during the week that things got a bit brighter on his scalp.
Gartner, along with the rest of the Hilltoppers squad, opted for a bleached-blond look with the postseason approaching.
âAnthony Oakley said something about the blond hair,â Gartner, who also collected two hits â both doubles â and a run batted in, said. âSo we just did it as a team-bonding thing.â
Committing to the new style was a long process for the Hilltoppers.
âThree days,â Gartner said.
âThree full days. We were there six hours each day. It takes a while.â
While the Westmont Hilltop coaching staff has yet to join the hair trend, coach Chris DelSignore has no objections to the teamâs new universal look.
âWe had a couple of seniors that wanted to do it and they just had buy-in from everybody,â DelSignore said. âBut hey, whatever keeps them loose.
âTheyâre a good group.
âTheyâre a tight-knit group of guys and whatever it is to keep everything loose and keep it fun, because thatâs what weâre here to do: Have fun and win.â
And when exactly will the coaches go blond?
âWeâve got a few more wins to rack up until that happens,â DelSignore said, âbut itâs nice to get that first one.â
After leaving the bases loaded in the first inning, Westmont Hilltop (12-7) struck for its first run as Landen Valente poked a flare into center to bring in Gartner with one gone in the second.
The Hilltoppers added two more in the third as Dom Chiodoâs sacrifice fly to center plated Justin Ray a batter before Gartner doubled in Jack Wesner on a 2-1 pitch.
The third-seeded Hilltoppers nibbled out another run in the fourth when Rayâs sacrifice to left chased in Sully Wier.
Dom Byer and Wier each supplied RBIs in the fifth inning before Wier scored on a throwing error on Bryce Goodmanâs infield single.
United, which finished the season at 11-10, got its hits from Braden Butler with one out in the second, and Brendan James with two gone in the sixth.
The Lionsâ hardest-hit ball came a batter before Jamesâ single when Dmitri Worthington lined out to Goodman at first base.
It was just that type of afternoon for United.
â(Gartner) did a really good job,â Lions coach Doug McNulty said. âHe was effective with three pitches, and we were up against the 8-ball with that.
Westmont Hilltop won the game against United with a score of 7-0.
Brady Gartner was the standout player, pitching six innings and allowing only two hits while striking out six batters.

âIt looked like he threw a little bit of a cutter with his four-seam (fastball), and I think our guys had issues with that.â
Gartner, who struck out the side in order during the fifth and will pitch at NCAA Division III Mount Aloysius College, ran into a spot of trouble in the sixth as he allowed the single to James and then walked Ryan Felix. After falling behind 2-0 to Connor Darr, Gartner induced a flyout to center to end the Lionsâ developing threat.
Wesner pitched the seventh, retiring United in order.
While Unitedâs season saw the curtain drop, McNulty has positive takeaways from the teamâs journey in 2026.
âAnother good year for us,â McNulty said. âWe made it to the playoffs. We won eight in a row. Our luck just ran out today.
âAll we can hope for is better things to come in 2027.â
James tossed 31/3 innings before giving way to Darr, who logged the final 22/3 frames.
