Packers not expecting to play Lions in Munich in 2026
Packers president says Lions want home game, not Munich in 2026
The NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams that lose valuable players in free agency. For the 2026 NFL Draft, 33 of the 257 picks will be compensatory selections.
"If it's free, it's for me."
That logic applies to more than just food, drinks, experiences and other items. It also applies to the NFL draft and the 32 teams that participate. Draft picks are some of the most valuable assets a team can have and every year, a chunk of them are handed out for free.
Of course, like anything else, there is a hidden cost to receiving a compensatory draft pick. Teams either have to lose valuable players in free agency or coaches and executives to other teams.
The league grants those picks to teams to offset departures, but something is still better than nothing. Considering that a gem can be found anywhere in the NFL draft, these selections can become trade pieces or the pick that changes the course of a franchise.
Of the 257 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, 33 of them will be of the compensatory variety. Here's a look at how the league determines those picks, who they were awarded to and where they fall in 2026.

Compensatory picks were initially intended for teams that lost more of their better players in free agency. The league has a formula that aims to offset the loss of those free agents, giving them an additional draft pick as compensation.
Players cut from a team are not included in the formula. Only players who have their contracts expire are eligible.
"If a team loses more players that qualify as CFAs than it signs during free agency, that team is eligible to be awarded compensatory picks in the following NFL draft," according to OverTheCap.
Aside from players, there is also a more recent addition to the compensatory pick formula.
In 2020, the collective bargaining agreement was amended to include the awarding of compensatory picks for the hiring of minority coaches and executives. If a team lost a minority coach or executive to another team, they would receive a third-round compensatory pick for two years. If they lost both a coach and an executive in one year, the team would then receive the pick for three years.
