Mike Brown turns competitive amid James Dolan's Knicks NBA Finals ultimatum
James Dolan challenges Mike Brown: Knicks need to reach the NBA Finals!
The current Premier League season features an intense relegation battle, with teams like Tottenham Hotspur striving to avoid dropping out. Historical trends show that a team can survive relegation with very few wins, depending on the performance of other teams.
What are the fewest wins needed to avoid Premier League relegation?
This season's Premier League relegation fight is proving to be one of the most fascinating in recent years with Tottenham Hotspur hoping to avoid a shock drop.
There have been plenty of fascinating relegation battles over the years, some decided on the very last day as teams move up and down the league during the final games.
The luck of staying up often depends on the success (or lack of success) of the teams around you, meaning that a team can win a lot of games and go down but on the flip side, barely win and somehow manage to stay up.
Indeed, four teams in the relegation scrap have already won more games than teams that have stayed up previously.
Most wins for relegated Premier League sides
How many games can you win and still go down in a 38-game season? Taking into account the mythic 40-point safety margin (which is usually enough to stay up) then 13 wins gets you to 39 which is theoretically sufficient.
So far, that has remained true and is likely to be the most extreme example of a team that would win 13 games and lose the other 25 games and somehow not draw a single game.
The current record of winning games and still being relegated is 10 ā a guaranteed minimum of 30 points not being enough to ensure survival in those seasons.
Middlesbrough and Sunderland were the first teams to have this happen in what was a very competitive 1996/97 season in which 13th to 19th were separated by just four points.
Since then Barnsley (97/98), West Ham United (02/03), Sheffield United (06/07), Reading (07/08), Blackpool (10/11), Bolton Wanderers (11/12), and most recently Cardiff CityĀ (18/19)Ā have all hit double figures for Premier League wins but have still faced the drop.
Going by this metric, Leeds United,Ā Nottingham Forest, and West Ham need just three more wins to hit 11 in total and ensure survival. Spurs, of course, would need four.
Fewest wins needed to survive in the Premier League
With that in mind that brings us to the next question ā what are the fewest wins that teams have earned and still stayed in the Premier League?
The aforementioned trio of Leeds, Forest, and West Ham are all on eight wins which has been sufficient for survival on seven occasions, most recently Everton in the 2022/23 season.
Spurs are of course on seven wins right now which has been a low enough bar for four teams to reach and still stay up.Ā Aston Villa were the first team to 'accomplish' this in the 2011/12 campaign helped largely to due 17 further points picked up through draws. Since then, West Brom (13/14), Sunderland (14/15), and Southampton (17/18) have also managed the same but it remains a rare feat.
Rarer still is to stay in the Premier League winning just six games. It's only happened once in the 2004/05 season ā a truly remarkable battle at the bottom of the table.
No team was relegated going into the final day that had a topsy-turvy four-way battle that West Brom escaped with just 34 points while Crystal Palace, Norwich City, and Southampton ultimately ended up in the Championship.
Like with Villa's seven-game survival season, draws were key to West Brom's survival. The same may remain true this season ā if you can snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat it couldĀ prove invaluable.
Historically, teams have managed to avoid relegation with as few as 30 points, which typically equates to around 8 to 10 wins, depending on other teams' performances.
A team's chances of avoiding relegation can be heavily influenced by the results of other teams, as the overall points tally in the league determines who stays up or goes down.
As of this season, teams like Tottenham Hotspur are among those fighting to avoid relegation, facing pressure from several other clubs in the lower half of the table.
In recent years, there have been instances where teams survived relegation with minimal wins, showcasing the unpredictable nature of the Premier League relegation battle.
