Joel Embiid and Mitchell Robinson have a history of conflict, highlighted by a flagrant foul incident during the 2024 postseason. Robinson criticized Embiid's play as reckless and called for his suspension, which did not occur.
When the New York Knicks play against the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the postseason, look out for Joel Embiid and Mitchell Robinson.
Embiid, who has also had incidents with Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns in the past, has a bit of a history with Robinson. The two first became entangled during Game 3 of the opening round of the postseason back on April 25, 2024.
Embiid grabbed Robinson's left ankle while Robinson was going for a dunk and was called for a flagrant foul. Players on the Knicks called the play "reckless" and "dirty" and the New York big man thought the Philadelphia star should have gotten suspended, though he was not.
Here is what Embiid said (via ESPN):
"Obviously Mitchell Robinson jumping and trying to land, trying to make sure he doesn't land on me because obviously we know the history that I have with Kuminga landing on my knee," Embiid said. "So I kind of had some flashbacks, when he came down to it.
During Game 3 of the 2024 postseason, Joel Embiid committed a flagrant foul by grabbing Mitchell Robinson's ankle while he was attempting a dunk.
Mitchell Robinson described Embiid's foul as reckless and dirty, leading him to believe that Embiid deserved a suspension for his actions.
Players from the New York Knicks labeled Embiid's play as reckless and expressed their disapproval, calling for disciplinary action against him.

"It was unfortunate. I didn't mean to hurt anybody. I just ... in those situations I gotta protect myself, because I've been in way too many situations where I'm always the recipient of the bad end of it. So yeah, it was unfortunate, but physical game. They want to bring the physicality. We can be physical too, and we are. So it goes both ways. I get bumped all over the place, and I just keep playing and I'm not going to take it. I gotta keep my mind and make sure that I don't get outside myself. But yeah, I just gotta keep being myself, being aggressive and physical."
Before the series against Philadelphia, the New York big man said it is behind him (via Newsday):
Robinson took the high road when asked Sunday if he thought Embiid was a dirty player. "I don’t,” Robinson said. “I really don’t live in the past. It is what it is. I just move on.”
But asked if there was still a lingering feeling that he didn’t get to finish the playoffs that year because of Embiid, he at least conceded, “I guess.”
Hopefully, the two are able to remain cordial and safe when they are on the court during the Eastern Conference semifinals.
