Todd Lewis has revealed what Rory McIlroy told him about his toe injury after walking off during a practice round at Aronimink on Tuesday ahead of the PGA Championship.
McIlroy is certainly going to be one of the players to beat at the second major of the year. The Northern Irishman provided a potential glimpse of what is to come over the remainder of his career with his victory at The Masters last month.
The 37-year-old looks to have been freed up after finally completing the Career Grand Slam last year.
However, some may have feared that his freedom at the PGA Championship would be limited due to an injury on his foot.
McIlroy has been dealing with a blister under his toenail. And there were concerning signs during Tuesday’s practice round at Aronimink.
The six-time major champion walked off the course after just a handful of holes. Having removed his shoe while on the course, it did appear that the injury was causing him more problems than he had previously let on.

However, speaking on McGinley and Chamblee at the PGA Championship, Todd Lewis revealed the encouraging message McIlroy had for him as he left the venue.
“I did catch up with Rory after he walked off the golf course, and he said he’s probably going to have to have a separator moving forward between his pinky toe and the fourth toe, because they’re rubbing up against each other,” he said.
“He’s going to bandage it, put on a new pair of shoes that he’s been fitted for, and he said he should be comfortable, get a little more healing tonight. He is not worried about that pinky for the PGA Championship.”

It may well only be on Thursday that it becomes truly apparent just how uncomfortable McIlroy is feeling. Obviously, he would probably refrain from revealing the true extent of the injury if he was dealing with a lot of pain.
The good news is that it does appear to not be impacting his game ahead of this week’s event.
Speaking after Lewis’ update, Paul McGinley insisted that he is not concerned about McIlroy’s problems as he looks to win a third PGA Championship crown.
“Nowadays, the physiotherapy is so good and they can dress these things so well. There’s no problem getting an exercise shoe if that’s required to fit in with all of the bandages. So I don’t see it being an issue,” he said.
“From what I understand, he’s swinging the club with no issues at all. It’s just the walking that’s a problem. We all know how uncomfortable a blister is, but he’s got the best medical people around him, so it should be no issue.”
There will be a lot of fans hoping that McIlroy did indeed take himself off the course as a precaution. Those same fans will be very anxious to see how he starts on Thursday.
