The Washington Commanders are focusing on rebuilding their roster after a disappointing 5-12 season. General manager Adam Peters is prioritizing youth and speed, having made significant defensive additions during the offseason.
Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters had a monumental task ahead of him this offseason. After shocking everyone and going 12-5 and reaching the NFC Championship Game in 2024, the Commanders fell off a cliff last season, finishing 5-12.
To make matters worse, Washington was without picks in the second and fourth rounds in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, in some good news, the Commanders entered free agency with around $90 million in cap space. Peters created additional room by extending left tackle Laremy Tunsil, whom he acquired for those draft picks last March.
Peters' primary mission this offseason was to get younger and faster. Part of that strategy was overhauling one of the NFL's worst defenses.
Now, here we are, days after the 2026 NFL Draft, and we have a clearer picture of what the Commanders could look like in 2026. Peters added multiple edge rushers, Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson and Charles Omenihu in free agency, brought back defensive tackle Tim Settle, signed speedy, versatile linebacker Leo Chenal and added cornerback Amik Robertson and safety Nick Cross to revamp the secondary.
Offensively, Washington re-signed backup quarterback Marcus Mariota and signed athletic tight end Chig Okonkwo as an offensive weapon for quarterback . Additionally, the Commanders signed veteran wide receivers and .

The draft saw linebacker Sonny Styles coming to Washington. The freakishly athletic linebacker has the potential to become the next NFL great at the position. The Commanders also drafted Clemson wideout Antonio Williams as another weapon for Daniels.
So, what's left?
Kevin Patra of NFL.com revealed the remaining offseason to-do list for all 32 teams. For the Commanders, Patra had three questions:
The Commanders used a third-round pick on slot receiver Antonio Williams but still lack a legit outside threat to pair with Terry McLaurin. The assumption at this point is that they're waiting for Brandon Aiyuk -- Jayden Daniels' close friend -- to wiggle free from San Francisco. How long will they wait, and what will Washington do if he lands elsewhere? Snagging Styles gives Dan Quinn a chess piece for his revamped defense, which added nine veterans this offseason. The only other draft pick used on defense was edge Joshua Josephs in the fifth round. Styles can be used all over the field, so it will be intriguing to see Quinnâs plan for the stud when training camp opens. With the release of Tyler Biadasz, the Commanders had veteran Nick Allegretti penciled in to the center spot, a place heâd played just 178 snaps in his seven-year career. Washington waited until the sixth round to draft a pivot, swiping Matt Gulbin. The rookie wonât wow with physical traits, but he has experience and is a stout run blocker. Gulbin could win the starting gig.
Let's tackle the first question. We know how much Washington wanted to upgrade at receiver. Peters made an aggressive push for Alec Pierce before he chose to remain with the Colts. He also made a move for Romeo Doubs, who signed with the Patriots. While he failed to land either free agent, signing Brown and Jefferson, while bringing back Treylon Burks, ensures the Commanders will have depth at the position in 2026, so the floor will be much higher.
It's expected that Washington will sign Brandon Aiyuk once he's free from the 49ers. The only question is when will that be?
As for Styles, this is not Dan Quinn's scheme. New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones will employ a similar scheme to what Brian Flores runs in Minnesota, which should excite Washington fans.
Who starts at center? For now, the answer would be Nick Allegretti. The Commanders believe there will be no dropoff from last year's start, Tyler Biadasz. Could Washington turn to the versatile and athletic Brandon Coleman? Don't rule it out. The Commanders also used a sixth-round pick on Michigan State center Matt Gulbin. While Gulbin is unlikely to start early, could he factor into the equation at some point?
For the most part, Washington's roster is set. There will be more moves, but a move for Aiyuk or free-agent receiver Jauan Jennings would likely be the only big moves remaining for the Commanders ahead of training camp in July.
