Shedeur Sanders is heading to his second season in Cleveland, and he needs to prove something. Last year, the team's former coach, Kevin Stefanski, at times suggested Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel were further along in understanding the offense, which contributed to Sanders getting limited early action as a rookie.
Now, with Todd Monken running a new system and a new playbook on the table, a version of that same question has resurfaced since the signing of the new coach heading into the first minicamp of 2026.
Sanders addressed it on Tuesday after Cleveland's first voluntary offseason session.
âI know how I learn. Knowing that I know how I learn is great. The coaches are able to communicate in different ways to help you learn and that's why I appreciate the coaching staff, honestly. You could say somebody donât know how to learn but itâs like, how did the person get all the way to this level if he donât know how to learn?
âSo then you got to change the perspective and think: Does he not know how to learn or do I not know how to communicate with him?â
"So Iâm just thankful that my coaches now are extremely embracing me," Sanders said.
The new Browns head coach has been publicly positive about Sanders from day one. At the combine in February, Monken described seeing "elite playmaking ability" in the young quarterback. He's already noted that Sanders has been a regular in his office this spring, and by all accounts, that goes both ways.
Deshaun Watson is still with the team. still carrying that $230 million contract. The next few months will be important for all the QBs.
Shedeur Sanders emphasized his understanding of how he learns and appreciated the coaching staff's ability to communicate effectively to aid his adaptation to Todd Monken's new offensive system.
In his rookie season, Shedeur Sanders had limited action as he struggled to grasp the offense, with former coach Kevin Stefanski suggesting other quarterbacks were ahead in understanding.
With Todd Monken as the new coach, the Cleveland Browns are implementing a new system and playbook, which poses a fresh challenge for players like Shedeur Sanders.
