Stefon Diggs is from the DMV. He was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He went to high school near there. Then he went to the University of Maryland before moving on to the NFL.
Diggs has played 11 productive-as-heck seasons since then, starring for the Vikings, Bills, Texans and Patriots. He became an unrestricted free agent this spring after New England released him, and he still hasn’t found a new team.
Would he come play for his hometown team, especially one featuring quarterback Jayden Daniels and a receiver corps desperately needing talent opposite Terry McLauin?
He was about that on Saturday by a reporter from The Team 980-AM in the Washington market, and whether he has talked to Commanders players about joining their squad.
“A little bit,” Diggs said at a charity even for his Diggs Deep Foundation. “I’m familiar with the city. I’m familiar with the people, so we’re going to see down the pipe over these next couple months what looks good, what makes sense. I definitely want to shed some light on them and I might go check them out for a little bit. It’s love. It’s hometown, so it makes sense. But, right now (I’m taking) a breath. I’ve been training and doing everything I’m supposed to but I’m more targeting on the charitable stuff right now, and everything else will fall into place.”
Diggs has dealt with legal issues this offseason, though a Massachusetts jury found him not guilty of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges on Tuesday.
Diggs will be 33 when the season starts but had 1,013 receiving yards last year and has had over 1,000 yards in seven of the last eight seasons.
The Commanders undoubtedly need receiving help, though most of the focus has been on the possibility of adding Brandon Aiyuk if the 49ers release him as expected.
Stefon Diggs has not made any official statements about joining the Washington Commanders, but there is speculation about his interest in playing for his hometown team.
