The 2026 NFL Draft has concluded, and roster rankings have been updated. The Athletic's Austin Mock ranked all 32 NFL teams based on their projected performance using a model that evaluates player impact.
The 2026 NFL Draft is in the rearview mirror. While free agency seemingly never ends, the bulk of it is also over. That means, for the most part, all 32 NFL rosters are essentially set.
The Athletic's Austin Mock recently ranked all 32 NFL rosters following the NFL draft. Mock used a projection model showing each team's expected margin of victory (xMOV) against the average NFL roster. Using that model, Mock ranked teams from 1-32.
Here is more on his methodology:
My model has compiled all the rosters as they stand after the NFL Draft and ranked them from best to worst. To do this, the model uses various metrics and assigns a projection to each player to show their impact on a single game. Of course, positional value is quite important, which means, for example, that quarterback Josh Allen is worth a lot more to his team than running back Bijan Robinson, even though both sit atop their respective positions.
The Washington Commanders finished 22nd with an XMOV of -1.3.
I was low on the Commanders heading into last season, and I'm low on them again this year. My model is not a fan of their wide receivers room, and the offensive line grades out as average.
But, as has been the case for some time now, my real concerns reside with Washington's defense. I don't know what there is to like about this group — the defensive line is below average, and the cornerbacks group is one of the worst in football. Yes, rookie linebacker Sonny Styles should provide immediate help, but I'm not sure he'll be enough to make this unit better than 25th or so in the league.
There are some fair points here, but Mock is a bit harsh on the offensive line. Yes, Washington moved on from center , but the team clearly believes his play fell off last season. is one of the NFL's best offensive linemen, while is an outstanding right guard. Right tackle Josh Conerly took massive steps from the first half of the season through the final eight games.

Mock's model assesses player impact on game outcomes, factoring in various metrics and positional value to rank teams from best to worst.
Quarterback Josh Allen is highlighted as a significantly more valuable player compared to others like running back Bijan Robinson, reflecting positional value in the rankings.

Is the defensive line just average? It's impossible to say based on the new additions the Commanders made. If you base it on last year, then yes, it is an average group, especially if Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw do not play up to their potential.
Mock makes fair points on the cornerbacks and receivers. The receiver group is already much better than last year, with the additions of Antonio Williams and Dyami Brown, but more work remains. At cornerback, the Commanders need another starting-level player, which may not be available at this point in the offseason.
There is a reason they play the games. There is no doubt that Washington's roster is better now than it was in January. How much better? We won't know until September.
As for the rest of the NFC East, the Eagles ranked No. 7, the Cowboys No. 14, and the Giants No. 26.
