Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez and his coaching staff have had to endure plenty of obstacles to winning games over the past two seasons due to the franchise's rebuild. Fernandez and his staff were put together with the goal of maximizing the player development aspect of the team and despite all of the losing, everyone is being rewarded for their work.
The Nets announced on Monday that they have signed Fernandez and his staff to contract extensions as the organization continues its current rebuild in their search for the next playoff-worthy team. Fernandez came to Brooklyn for his first head-coaching job and along the way, general manager Sean Marks has made sure to optimize the team's chances of putting together a winning team.
"Jordi is a tremendous leader who, along with his coaching staff, put his stamp on this franchise from the moment he arrived in Brooklyn," Marks said as part of his statement explaining the extensions. "Over his first two seasons, Jordi has built a strong foundation rooted in player development, a competitive spirit and honest communication, all of which have been embraced throughout our roster."
Fernandez, 43, currently has a 46-118 record over the past two seasons as Brooklyn's head coach, both of which have been as part of the rebuild. Fernandez has surrounded himself with plenty of coaches that have experience as a head coach or player development, such as former Michigan head coach Juwan Howard and former Portland Trail Blazers assistant Steve Hetzel.
Fernandez ended the season acknowledging that this summer would be an important one for the entire franchise and it seems that he made those remarks knowing that he would be one of the people responsible for getting results. Now that Fernandez and the coaching staff have received contract extensions, the real work begins this summer as the Nets could potentially attempt to compete for a playoff spot as soon as next season.
