The Washington Commanders' most questionable pick in the 2026 NFL Draft was QB Athan Kaliakmanis from Rutgers, selected in the seventh round. Despite concerns, general manager Adam Peters had a strong draft overall.
At the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, NFL insiders, analysts, experts, and members of the media began assessing how each team's draftees fit with their new teams. As we take a deep dive into each team's draft class, there are always picks that feel questionable. CBS Sports recently named one questionable pick for each team, and it wasn't hard to determine the Washington Commanders' most questionable pick.
**Washington Commanders: QB Athan Kaliakmanis, Rutgers (Round 7, No. 223 overall)**Kaliakmanis was the pick, by default, because general manager Adam Peters did an excellent job over these three days. The Rutgers quarterback played his best football in his final collegiate season, so perhaps there are even better days ahead.
As indicated in their reasoning, Adam Peters' draft selections were very much on point in 2026. Linebacker Sonny Styles in round one, Antonio Williams (WR) in round three, edge rusher Joshua Josephs in round five, Kaytron Allen (RB) and Matt Gulbin (C) in the sixth round, and finally, Kaliakmanis in the seventh. The latter is the one piece the Commanders may not have actually needed, but perhaps Peters has a plan for him.
The Commanders' roster as a whole is improved after free agency moves and the draft. They have new offensive and defensive coordinators, and it legitimately feels like everyone is on the same page. Not just with player personnel, but with the entire plan for 2026.
The ultimate goal for every team is to make it to the Super Bowl. In 2026, the Commanders' goal is no different. In the absence of winning the Super Bowl, though, a nice consolation prize would be to make the postseason for the second time in three years, a feat they have not accomplished since Joe Gibbs was the head coach 20 years ago. Will Kaliakmanis play a role in making that happen? The Commanders used three quarterbacks in 2025, so anything is possible.
Athan Kaliakmanis was deemed questionable because he was the only pick that seemed unnecessary, given the Commanders' overall strong draft performance.
The Commanders also selected linebacker Sonny Styles in round one, WR Antonio Williams in round three, and edge rusher Joshua Josephs in round five.
The Commanders improved their roster through strategic free agency moves and a cohesive draft plan, aided by new offensive and defensive coordinators.

Ultimately, it's hard to argue with using a seventh-round pick on a developmental quarterback. After all, Sam Hartman hasn't progressed, and this could be Marcus Mariota's last season as Jayden Daniels' backup. If new offensive coordinator David Blough endorsed the Kaliakmanis pick, that's the most important thing.
