The Cleveland Cavaliers made a defining decision early in LeBron James’ career, one that shaped the direction of the franchise.
At the time, the team already had an established scorer in Ricky Davis, a player firmly in his prime and producing at a high level.
But when LeBron arrived, it quickly became clear that both could not operate in the same role for long.

Speaking on Run It Back, Davis explained how he viewed the Cavaliers trading him after James’ arrival.
“It was a business, and I knew what it was. I was in my prime then, and I was on fire, and I knew the game well. I knew I didn’t need players for me to score points,” Davis said.
He added, “So when LeBron came in as a rookie, I was already ready. I was already seasoned. So he was basically feeding me the ball.”
The comment highlights the contrast in roles, with Davis operating as a proven scorer while LeBron was still adjusting to the NBA as a rookie.
At least initially, the pairing functioned more as a veteran-led offense rather than one built around the incoming superstar.
The Cavaliers chose LeBron James because it became evident that he and Ricky Davis could not effectively share the same role on the team.

The situation, however, did not last long, and the decision to move Davis came just 22 games into LeBron’s rookie season.
At the time, Davis had been the team’s leading scorer the year prior with over 20 points per game, but Cleveland’s front office believed his ball-dominant style would limit LeBron’s development as the primary offensive engine.
“The first three games, I think I was averaging like 25 points,” Davis stated. “So they were like, ‘God, it’s not going to work. It’s not an opportunity for him to grow just because, you know, Ricky’s just whatever we do, he’s just on fire. He won’t stop,’ You know, so they got me out of there.”
It also reflected a broader reality in the NBA: once a generational talent arrives, roster decisions tend to revolve entirely around maximizing that player’s trajectory.
In this case, it meant moving on from a proven scorer to accelerate LeBron’s development.
Looking back, the decision defined the Cavaliers’ future, even if it came at the expense of a player who was performing at a high level.
