History is a cycle when change is not worked on constantly. The Dallas Mavericks just helped Cooper Flagg win NBA Rookie of the Year over Charlotte Hornets shooter Kon Knueppel. While the hardware and prestige given to the franchise might be good, Mavs fans should be more wary when viewing their front office in the next years unless they want a similar situation transpire with Jason Kidd and Luka Doncic.
Cooper Flagg is one of the greatest things to ever happen to the Mavericks. He has proven to be a capable scorer and all-around presence who could lead this team to their first title since Dirk Nowitzki. Moreover, his record-breaking NBA Rookie of the year season can only be compared to legends like LeBron James and Michael Jordan. While elation should be the first emotion, Mavs fans might want to see their NBA Rookie of the Year cycle first.

See, Flagg is the third player in Mavericks history to have ever won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. He joins Luka Doncic and Jason Kidd in that list. But, there is a big pattern after they won the award and it could happen to Flagg if the front office culture does not change. Both Doncic and Kidd were traded away prior to reaching seven seasons with the Mavericks, per StatMuse.
Kidd being traded to the Suns started this off. The Mavericks let go of him after just two and a half seasons. This was to acquire a core of like Michael Finley, AC Green, and AC Green. Doncic, on the other hand, got traded after six and a half seasons. In return, the Mavericks got Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.
Clearly, the front office and everyone in the Mavericks organization is different from what they were three decades ago. Nonetheless, it was patience that helped them win with Dirk Nowitzki back in 2011. To break this cycle, they should practice the same virtue with Flagg too.
