Anthony Edwards dapped up the Spurs bench during Game 6 while his team trailed by 33 points. He explained that he wanted to acknowledge the Spurs as they advanced to the Western Conference Finals.
With 8:01 remaining in Game 6 on Friday, Anthony Edwards made the peculiar decision to dap up players and coaches on the San Antonio Spurs bench.
The Minnesota Timberwolves faced a 33-point deficit at the time, and were largely outclassed all series, yet the optics still weren't great. Prime Video studio analysts Dirk Nowitzki, Blake Griffin and Udonis Haslem all questioned the move, with Haslem suggesting it was a sign of weakness.
"I've watched the NBA and been a part of it for a long, long time. I've never seen this," Nowitzki said. "A guy walking into the huddle with eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter and dapping up the entire team. Too much for me."
Edwards, who battled back from a knee injury to play every game in the Spurs series, justified the timing postgame. The former No. 1 overall pick said that because he likely wouldn't be checking back into the game, he thought it'd be an opportune moment to give the Spurs their flowers as they head to the Western Conference Finals.
“Just trying to get them respect they deserve,” Edwards said.
Edwards clearly didn't get respect from the NBA's oldheads.
The Timberwolves are hoping to break through after being good, but not quite good enough, to get out of the West the last three years. Edwards has been spectacular throughout, but the inconsistencies of the rest of the roster, as well as injuries to key players like Donte DiVincenzo, have proved fatal when it matters most.
Anthony Edwards dapped up the Spurs bench to acknowledge their performance as they advanced to the Western Conference Finals, believing he wouldn't re-enter the game.
Analysts Dirk Nowitzki, Blake Griffin, and Udonis Haslem criticized the gesture, with Haslem calling it a sign of weakness.
At the time of the gesture, the Timberwolves were trailing by 33 points in Game 6.
