The Detroit Lions canceled their annual rookie minicamp for 2026, making them the only NFL team to do so this year. The decision reflects a careful evaluation by the coaching staff.
As fans' attention returns to the NFL with news on teams' 2026 schedules trickling out all week, some Detroit Lions fans might be wondering why they haven't seen or heard more about the franchise's latest batch of rookies and its UDFAs.
One reason is because the Lions scrapped their annual rookie minicamp. Detroit is the only NFL team not holding a rookie minicamp this year.
Why is that?
"I had told you guys at the end of the season, me and Dan (Campbell) were going to take a long, hard look at every single thing from top to bottom and thatâs what we did. Not doing things just to do it just because you feel like you have to do it.
"You canât be scared when you want to try something new that you think is going to be better for your football team. So thatâs what we did and thatâs why some things are, from a calendar standpoint, looks like theyâre removed but thereâs other things that are going to be taking place that I feel is going to be more efficient," Lions general manager Brad Holmes said on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft.
NFL teams are allowed to hold three days of practices for drafted rookies, undrafted free agents and tryout players as part of their seven-week rookie orientation program. Typically, that's come two weeks after the NFL draft for the Lions.
But, as Holmes said, the Lions promised a thorough, critical review of how they've operated in the past in order to chart the best path forward. Lions rookies will still take part in a full development program.
The Lions canceled their rookie minicamp as part of a thorough evaluation by the coaching staff, aiming to avoid unnecessary activities.
Yes, the Detroit Lions are the only NFL team that will not hold a rookie minicamp in 2026.
The coaching staff emphasized the importance of not doing things just for the sake of tradition, indicating a thoughtful approach to their offseason activities.

"We're not just removing it and just using the idle time to twiddle our thumbs. It's something that we're utilizing to put in place of that, that we feel that's going to be more efficient," Holmes said.
In addition to nixing its rookie minicamp, the Lions also eliminated its local day pre-draft workout this spring and revealed that they won't do joint practices this year. The elimination of joint practices could pave the way for the Lions to play starters more in the preseason.
