All of this is so incredibly funny. Not too long ago, we did discuss the idea of Max Verstappen ripping up his Red Bull contract and switching sides to the Silver Arrows. But Kimi Antonelli has kind of put a stopper on the narrative. Still, that wonāt really stop the Dutchman from carving his own path through this.
You see, over the weekend at Spa, Mark Rushbrook, the global director of Ford Racing, made headlines. Rushbrook officially confirmed that the American automotive giant is having āregular discussionsā to get Verstappen into a Ford Hypercar for a future assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans. On paper, it is a match made in heaven.
Red Bullās 2026 engine partner is offering their star driver a chance at endurance racing glory alongside future Ford Hypercar driver Logan Sargeant. But there is one absolutely hilarious problem. Yes, Max Verstappen is definitely making his highly anticipated 24-hour racing debut at the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife. But that wonāt be in a Ford Mustang GT3. And by now, we think you have connected the dots: Yeah, the Dutchman is opting for the Mercedes-AMG GT3.
See, in the highly sanitized, corporate-controlled world of modern motorsport, brand loyalty is usually absolute. You will rarely see affiliated drivers hopping into a direct competitorās machinery for a major, globally televised race.
But as we all have seen before, Verstappen operates by his own set of rules. Red Bull Racing is currently partnered with Ford to build their 2026 F1 powertrains, meaning Ford is heavily invested in the Red Bull ecosystem. Yet, when Max decided he wanted to conquer the Green Hell with his own Verstappen Racing team, he bypassed the Blue Oval entirely and opted for the German rival.
The fact that Rushbrook even had to field questions about this at Spa shows just how unprecedented the situation is. āWe prefer our Ford drivers to stay in Ford,ā Rushbrook admitted to reporters. āWe understand why he did that, we love his passion, we love that heās a racer⦠Thatās the right program for him right now, but weād love to see him in a Ford in the sportscar world at some point.ā

Verstappen's choice to race a competitor's car highlights the unusual nature of brand loyalty in modern motorsport, especially given his ties to Red Bull and Ford.

Can you sit back and imagine the boardroom panic if any other driver pulled the same act? The Dutchman is so dominant that Ford could only smile and praise his āpassionā. See, even Logan Sargeant recently noted that if Max ever came to Le Mans, āHeās going to most likely kick everyoneās ass. Iād rather that be in my car than the other.ā
Although the F1 grid has not treated the Dutchman too kindly, that didnāt stop him from pulling the ultimate driver flex. Pretty muchĀ proving that he is entirely bigger than the corporate branding that pays the bills.
