Why former Titans GM Ran Carthon is assisting Ravenwood girls flag football
Former Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon is back on the football field in Tennessee, this time in a different capacity.
This spring, Carthon — who spent over a decade as an NFL executive that included two years as the Titans GM — has lent his hand to Ravenwood girls flag football coach Ricky Rodriguez, working as a defensive assistant for the defending state invitational champions. Carthon's daughter Rhea is a senior linebacker with the Raptors.
Rhea missed her entire junior season due to injury, but returning to the field this season, Carthon extended an offer to Rodriguez to assist the team in any way he could. Rodriguez didn't hesitate to accept.

"(He's helping) in an unofficial capacity," Rodriguez said. "He breaks down the film. That was kind of my agreement with him, if he was going to be on the sideline, he was going to have to do the tasks I'd have any assistant coach do. Which is break down film, send me some thoughts on what he's seeing.
"The girls love him ... He's been a huge addition to our community and to see him at every one of our games in the fall as well just shows that he's invested not only in the girls flag football program, but in the boys program as well, and Ravenwood as a whole."
Carthon began his career in the front office as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons in 2008. He'd go on to become director of player personnel with the Rams and later the 49ers, before being hired as the Titans GM in 2023. In addition to his GM duties, he was elevated to executive vice president of the Titans in 2024.
Carthon currently works as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports, and his expertise has been a welcome addition on the Ravenwood sideline this season, as the Raptors are 10-2 through April 16.
"The best thing for me is knowing that the other girls on the team appreciate me being there," Carthon said. "It really started out as me wanting to help Rhea be the best that she can be, but then naturally you see something like, 'Hey man, I noticed this young lady's doing this, can I talk to her about it?' ... and then it becomes something where you help one and she sees the benefits then now the others come and say, 'Hey, what do you see in my game?'"
