The Cleveland Browns were reportedly cooking up a blockbuster deal for former New York Giants star Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, according to a Saturday morning report from NFL Draft analyst Josh Taylor.
“Had two people tell me the Browns are looking to finalize a trade for Lawrence,” Taylor reported on X/Twitter Saturday. “Now we wait and see.”
However, on Saturday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shocked the NFL world and disappointed the Browns by announcing that the Giants traded Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for draft capital.
“Draft week blockbuster: The Giants are trading three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Bengals in a deal that will include the 10th overall pick going to New York,” Schefter stated.
“The Giants now head into Thursday night with the 5th and 10th overall picks. Cincinnati believed that Dexter Lawrence would be more impactful this season, in a big year, than the 10th overall pick in this draft. Bengals didn’t wait to get aggressive.”
Adding Lawrence to the fold could have been a beneficial move for the Browns. Although the Clemson product has regressed lately after three consecutive seasons in New York, his upside is still exceptional, and it’s reasonable to assume his best years are still ahead of him.

The Browns defense, led by 23-sack star edge rusher Myles Garrett, continues to be among the organization's strongest and most reliable units. There’s a good chance that inserting Lawrence into the equation would have paid dividends in the foreseeable future, given the 28-year-old’s alluring resume seven years into his career (two-time second-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler).
Unfortunately for Cleveland, though, Lawrence will continue his NFL career with Cincinnati instead.
