Before Kalen DeBoer's appearance on ESPN's "Always College Football" podcast was over, former Alabama football quarterback and host Greg McElroy threw up a Hail Mary. The floor was DeBoer's, he said with a grin, to give any indication of who the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback would be: redshirt junior Austin Mack or redshirt freshman Keelon Russell.
"I'm not ready. I'm not ready," DeBoer said with a smile.
But through spring and into summer, because of the state of the Alabama quarterback battle, DeBoer said he knows what the quarterback position could be in 2026.

Both grew, DeBoer said. Both took advantage of the opportunities given to them. And both have high ceilings.

But right now, ceiling is not what is important.
"I talk about the ceiling for some of these guys. I think it's what's the floor?" DeBoer said. "Knowing at the very least we're at this point, like it leaves a lot of optimism on what that room's going to be and what it's going to lead to as far as production on the football field each and every Saturday."
Mack has been with DeBoer since his final season at Washington, and has 26 completions on 35 pass attempts for 267 yards and four total touchdowns across three seasons.
Russell completed 11 of 15 pass attempts as a true freshman in 2025 for 143 yards and two touchdowns.
Alabama opens the 2026 season against East Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 5 on ABC.
