Why Man United scrapped awards night despite Champions League return

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Carrick insisted that the role feels “natural” to him and he is enjoying every minute of it.

Despite the success United have enjoyed under Carrick, which has them on course to finish in third place, the Daily Mail reveal that the Red Devils will not hold an end-of-season player awards night.

United pull the plug

United scrapped the gala event at Old Trafford in 2024 after finishing eighth in the Premier League, although they won the FA Cup at the expense of cross-town rivals Manchester City.

The celebration was cancelled again the following year after a 15th-placed finish and Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Daily Mail explain, “It has been decided to honour any personal achievements among the men’s and women’s teams in a more private setting at Carrington later this month.”

“Sources say the decision is not so much a reflection on a rollercoaster campaign – at 40 games, United’s shortest since the First World War because they weren’t in Europe and fell at the first hurdle in both domestic cup competitions – and more because of a move away from gala awards nights.”

Meanwhile, United return to action on Saturday when they go away to Sunderland. Kick-off is at 15:00 BST.
