But The Athletic's Will Sammon argues that outfielder A.J. Ewing's call-up to the Majors, after just 13 games at Triple-A, is a desperate move by the organization.
"The common sentiment from executives, scouts, and agents across the league following news of Ewingâs promotion to the big leagues a night earlier sounded considerably less enthused: The Mets reek of desperation," Sammon wrote Wednesday.
Desperation may be working in the Mets' favor. Ewing hit his first career MLB home run on Thursday afternoon against the Detroit Tigers.
Regardless, Ewing is a player who likely needs more reps and at-bats in the minors at some point this season.
"For as desperate a move as it was, calling up Ewing to play center field on an everyday basis was also necessary," Sammon added. "He was the best option. Says a lot about him. Says more about the state of the Mets."
