Chelsea: No shots, no tackles for 30 minutes, out-run in 34 consecutive matches
Chelsea faces another defeat, losing 3-0 to Brighton, with no shots for 30 minutes.
Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres received a misconduct penalty during a game against the Boston Bruins, leading to his extended absence from the ice. He eventually returned late in the game as the Sabres attempted a rally.
Why Sabres' Tage Thompson was out for so long with misconduct before subbing in late in rally attempt vs. Bruins originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The word "misconduct" with hockey penalties can actually mean multiple things.
That added to a bit of the confusion with Tage Thompson and the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins.
Thompson was part of a big melee and was given a misconduct midway through the third period.
It seemed like his night was over as a long stretch went on without Thompson on the ice.
But then with about 90 seconds left, he subbed back in.
What the heck actually happened?
The key was that Thompson hadn't been given a "game misconduct," which results in an immediate ejection.
He'd instead been given a 10-minute misconduct penalty. So after 10 minutes passed, he could come back in.
He had left the ice, not sitting in the penalty box or on the bench area. So anyone only partially paying attention would've assumed he was done for the night.
But when the Sabres started to rally, cutting a 4-0 deficit to 4-1 and then 4-2, Thompson reappeared, and then he skated back into the game.
He couldn't make it happen further, but it clarified the original penalty call hadn't been the ejection-variety misconduct but just the 10-minute version.
Not confusing at all, huh?
