After losing in the first round of the playoffs (again), the Pittsburgh Steelers got a golden opportunity to reset this offseason. Mike Tomlin walked away and Aaron Rodgers became a free agent, giving the Steelers a rare chance to start fresh with a new head coach and quarterback.
But instead of seizing the opportunity to rebuild, Pittsburgh settled for more of the same. It somehow got older at both positions rather than younger, hiring a Tomlin clone in Mike McCarthy and waiting for a 42-year-old Rodgers to return.
That plan is already questionable on its own merits, but it makes even less sense given how loaded the 2027 NFL Draft is expected to be. If there was ever a time for the Steelers to play for draft positioning rather than meaningless regular-season success, this was it.
Instead, Pittsburgh squandered a remarkable chance to reset its franchise.
The Steelers hired Mike McCarthy as a head coach to maintain continuity after Mike Tomlin, but this decision has been criticized for lacking innovation.
Signing a 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers could hinder the Steelers' ability to develop younger talent and adapt to a changing NFL landscape.
The Steelers lost in the first round of the playoffs, which prompted discussions about their need for a significant offseason reset.

"Next year's quarterback class is loaded. A lot of guys besides Arch Manning are gonna be in the mix for that #1 pick. If you're Pittsburgh, what are you doing getting in the Aaron Rodgers business?" Jason McIntyre asked on Friday's episode of "The Herd."
McIntyre noted that the Steelers' model of building around defense and a veteran quarterback no longer works in the playoffs. Pittsburgh has lost seven straight postseason games and 10 of its last 13.
The league is trending in the other direction now and has been for some time, but the Steelers stubbornly refuse to change. Accordingly, they will likely keep getting the same results.
