It worked. Why not stick with it?
On Bruins breakup day, Marco Sturm said he âthought it went real well,â especially for his first year in the league. After initially wanting a captain, he did not commit to naming one ahead of next season, but said further conversations with GM Don Sweeney were needed.
On Wednesday, Sweeney, Bruins president Cam Neely, and CEO/alternate governor Charlie Jacobs addressed the media in their end-of-season press conference. A range of topics were discussed, including the vacant captaincy.
âI think obviously we would love to name a captain, but weâve had some great captains here, so one of the things that we want to do is make sure weâre picking the right guy, and Marco is going to be a big part of that,â said Neely. âSo having a new coach come in and implementing a new system, getting to know the players, I think it only made sense to see how the season played out, and then weâre going to have plenty⊠weâve already started discussions about that, for sure, and weâre going to have plenty more in this offseason.â
The Bruins can name a captain whenever they want, and in years past, they have announced their captain closer to the start of the season.
Before the season started, Don Sweeney talked about having a captain âemerge,â and though the Bruins have two deserving candidates, nothing went wrong with the leadership group in the 2025-26 season.
The Bruins have more immediate work to do in the offseason, like adding speed and skill while addressing needs for a first-line center and a right-shot defenseman.
The Bruins have leadership, even without someone labeled as the teamâs captain, and they showed it this season. David Pastrnak, , and wore the âAâsâ on their sweater. and filled in when any were unavailable.
The Bruins are satisfied with their performance without a captain and believe further discussions are necessary before making a decision.

Even goaltender Jeremy Swayman showed leadership throughout the season. In the playoffs, he pushed for a timeout in Game 2 and sent a message to his team after a brutal showing in Game 4.
Regardless, the two front-runners to wear the âCâ are both career-long Bruins, and they are both an integral part of the leadership and culture.
Whether it was responding to Marco Sturmâs calls for his âbest players to be his best playersâ or lifting the Bruins out of two six-game losing streaks this season, both David Pastrnak and Charlie McAvoy were relied upon, and they fought individual battles to lead the Bruins to the postseason.
Sweeney does not view the decision as choosing one over the other.
âWhen youâre talking about two players that are currently captains and a big, big part of our leadership group, youâre not in a position thinking youâre choosing between somebody. Theyâre great people. Theyâre great teammates. They are great Boston Bruins, so for us, we look at the big picture and say, whereâs everybody in their own personal development, their own family dynamic, and who can impact us the most without impacting themselves, and how they go about their daily life,â said Sweeney. âLeadership is a collective process, and I think we proved this year that those guys took ownership of it. We grew, they grew, and now youâre going to eventually get to the point where you feel comfortable that we are going to have another captain here.â
There is no rush to name a captain; there is no lack of leadership in the locker room.
