The New York Yankees optioned right-hander Luis Gil to Triple-A after Sunday's loss against the Astros.
Gil allowed two two-run home runs and did not strike out a batter in four innings. He does not look like the same caliber of pitcher who won the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year.
But FanSided's Austin Owens believes there's no reason for the Yankees to panic. If Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon were healthy, Gil would likely be moved to the bullpen or making starts in Triple-A regardless.
"While most MLB teams would be going into panic mode if a former Rookie of the Year performed as poorly as Gil has, the Yankees are not even breaking a sweat over this situation," Owens wrote Monday. "In fact, sooner rather than later, there may not have been a spot for him in Aaron Boone's rotation anyway."
New York's potent offense gives them enough flexibility to make a move like this.

"Optioning Gil to Triple-A also shows how dangerous this offense is. The Yankees currently rank sixth in the MLB in runs scored, and it appears the organization trusts this offense to continue pushing runs across," Owens added. "To be fair, why wouldn't they? With superstars like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm, and the continued emergence of guys like Austin Wells and Ben Rice, there are no holes in that lineup."
There hasn't been much of an "emergence" from Wells, but that's another story.
In regards to Gil, he will have to earn back his trust from the organization. They may not view him as a future frontline starter anymore.
