WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — League 42, a youth baseball league in Wichita, celebrated opening day on Wednesday.
The league aims to combine the joy of baseball and off-the-field learning all into one place.
Founded in 2013, the Wichita-based program now serves more than 600 players across 43 teams, expanding into education initiatives and field renovations, all while keeping costs low for families.
Founder Bob Lutz said the idea came from a simple place: a lifelong love of the game and a desire to make it accessible.
“I wanted to do what I could to introduce the game of baseball to families and kids who didn’t have the financial means,” Lutz said. “I love the game. I’ve loved it since I was a kid.”

Inspired by Jackie Robinson, League 42 emphasizes lessons that extend beyond the field, including teamwork, respect and resilience. Each player wears No. 42 on their hat, honoring Robinson’s legacy.
The league’s affordability is central to its mission. For $30, players receive a full uniform, a glove and any additional equipment needed to participate.
Before games began this week, the league celebrated its growth with new murals, turf upgrades and uniforms, which Lutz says is a reflection of the community’s support.
Among the supporters was Paul Mills, head men’s basketball coach at Wichita State University, who threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

“I think sports are important, especially to young kids,” Mills said. “To be around a team, to try to do something that’s bigger than yourself.”
More than a decade after its launch, League 42 continues to expand, reaching more families each year. But as the program grows, Lutz said he is beginning to reflect on what has already been accomplished.
“We’ve done so much in these 13 years,” he said. “To be honest with you, it’s time to take a little breath and relax and kind of wallow in our successes a little bit.”
