The good news is that Quinn Hughes likes the idea of signing a contract extension to stay with the Wild long term. The bad news, in a relative sense, is that it's going to cost a lot of money.
Hughes spoke with reporters on Friday after Minnesota's season ended, and he was asked about his future. The context is that Hughes has just one year left on his current deal.
When the Wild made the blockbuster deal to get Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks, they clearly would've hoped to keep him around longer than just a season and a half.
Hughes seems up for that.
“I really like it here," Hughes told reporers on Friday. "I love the team. I love the city and the fans. Being in that locker room, it’s a special group. I would definitely be open to re-signing here with the guys that we have."

Hughes has a case as the best defenseman in the NHL, and he's just 26 years old. He'll likely set some sort of record with the money he gets in the new deal.
It'll pretty much be up to him whether he signs his name on a contract with the Wild or another team.
Hughes was brilliant after the Wild acquired him midseason. He played 48 games with Minnesota and had 48 assists and five goals for 53 total points.
He also averaged 27 minutes and 54 seconds of ice time with the Wild. Hughes just loves being on the ice.
He's a foundational piece, for sure, and he proved his value additionally by helping lead the United States to an Olympic gold medal.
Everything about Hughes makes him worth it for Minnesota to keep, and since he wants to be around, it's something the Wild should be looking to make happen.
