The NHL will increase its regular season from 82 to 84 games starting in 2026-27, requiring teams to utilize their goaltenders more. Filip Gustavsson sees a future with the Minnesota Wild despite sharing the crease with rookie Jesper Wallstedt.

With Colorado looking like a solid favorite to win the Stanley Cup after rotating goalies during its second-round series victory over the Wild last week, there is more and more evidence that the era of one puck-stopper playing every night for one team is long gone.
So, when asked about his future in Minnesota, Filip Gustavsson â who went from the teamâs number one in the regular season to backing up rookie Jesper Wallstedt in the playoffs â said he sees a place for him in the Wildâs crease next season.
âI donât think much has changed,â Wallstedt told reporters on Friday at Grand Casino Arena. âYou know, me and Wally (are) huge competitors and weâre fighting for the same spot, the same as this year. We came out ⊠fighting in practice, fighting for the ice time, and thatâs what weâre going to do next year, too, to help this team moving forward with a good goalie squad.â
After signing a five-year contract extension at the start of the regular season, Gustavsson appeared in 50 games, winning 28 of them. But he had a handful of rough starts in March and April as the team geared up for the playoffs. Wallstedt, in his first full NHL season, played in 35 games and won 18 but when playoff time came, Wild coach John Hynes rode the rookieâs hot play into the second round.
Looking back, Gustavsson admitted, that after returning from the Olympics â where he played for Team Sweden â his game wasnât where it needs to be.
âI wouldnât say the game itself was bad for me, like technical-wise or anything like that had to change. Itâs more like just a bad rhythm, you know?â he said. âYou get a few bounces and then you get a few more bad bounces, and it just took too long for me to catch up with that and get back into being super comfortable back there, show that calmness and and give that team that super confidence in me.â
Gustavsson said Hynesâ decision to go with Wallstedt for 10 of the Wildâs 11 playoff games made sense.
âHynsie, as a head coach, probably saw that, and Wally played very good this year; played very good coming into playoff, too,â he said. âWhy would you switch, then, if the team is playing good with that goalie at the back end there?â

Gustavsson got one playoff start, a 5-2 loss to Colorado in Game 2 of the second round series. Wallstedt was 5-5 with a 2.77 goals-against average and .907 save percentage. He gave up eight goals in a 9-6 loss in Game 1 at Denver.
In the lead-up to the 2026 trade deadline, Wallstedt was often mentioned as a commodity that the Wild might dangle to other teams. As summer free agency and the trades that often happen in June and July get closer, Gustavsson is fully aware that he might now garner interest elsewhere â especially if the team views Wallstedt as its long-term answer in net.
âYou know if trade talks happen, itâs another team that really wants you,â said Gustavsson, who came to the Wild in a July 2022 trade with Ottawa. âAnd you know, itâs the same way when if youâre playing good somewhere; another team wants you and theyâre very happy to get you. âŠThatâs just how I look at it. You know, if I play good enough, wherever I am, someoneâs gonna want to have me as a goalie. Thatâs how you have to look at it.â
For his part, Wallstedt said his relationship with Gustavsson is valued, that, the veteranâs mentorship has been vital to his acclimation to the NHL. The competition for the crease is healthy, he said. They speak the same language, literally.
âObviously, both of us want to play,â Wallstedt said. âBut he was always very supportive to me. I usually have a lot of questions, or I wonder a lot of stuff for plays that happen out there. Itâs always easier when weâre both doing it in Swedish, too, so we can kind of isolate our conversation and we can get our own thoughts on it. But he was always very, supportive of me.â
Pending any personnel moves, the Wild appear to have a goalie tandem going forward. And in the modern NHL, they need one.
