Giancarlo Stanton is the designated hitter of the New York Yankees and likely will be until the 13-year contract he signed with the Miami Marlins runs out.
Following the 2027 season, the Yankees have a $25 million club option for Stanton for 2028. New York will pay him a $10 million buyout if it declines.
Stanton's remaining contract, among other reasons, is why the Yankees won't make a trade with the Houston Astros for an MVP candidate.
Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer lists the Yankees as someone who could use Yordan Alvarez in their lineup, but they don't necessarily need him.
"Alvarez at Yankee Stadium? That idea alone is worth throwing the Yankees into the hypothetical mix," Rymer wrote Wednesday. "But they just don't need another slugger, and indeed should be focused on trading for a whole new bullpen."
The Astros owe Alvarez $28.6 million million per year through the 2028 season. At 28, he's eight years younger than Stanton but faces similar defensive and injury struggles as the potential future Hall of Famer.
The Yankees are unlikely to trade Stanton due to his significant contract, which includes a $25 million option for 2028 and a $10 million buyout.
Stanton has a 13-year contract with the Yankees that runs until after the 2027 season, with a club option for 2028.
Yordan Alvarez is an MVP candidate whose name has been linked to the Yankees as a potential addition, although they do not necessarily need him.
