Wilder Praises Sheffield United Performance; Explains What Blades Must “Keep Working On”

Chris Wilder Showers Blades With Praise After Controlled Win

After the match, speaking to SUTV, manager Chris Wilder praised both the performance and the mentality of his side.

“We needed that type of performance,” Wilder said. “They’ve got some really technical players who can hurt you, so we had to defend properly. Getting the first goal, and then quickly the second, was huge for us psychologically.”

He also highlighted the game management shown late on, adding: “We made intelligent, experienced decisions. I went a little bit early to a back five because I wanted that clean sheet. The lads put their bodies on the line and I never really felt threatened in the last 15 or 20 minutes.”

Wilder emphasised the importance of momentum heading into the final stretch of the season, with United now sitting 12th and pushing to finish strongly.

“Two wins on the spin, two home games to go; we’ve got to get something out of this season, and we’re determined to do that,” he said.

The manager also pointed to areas for improvement, particularly in controlling possession: “We’ve looked at turnovers, and statistically we’d be much higher in the table if we were calmer on the ball. That’s something we need to keep working on.”

Individual performances did not go unnoticed either, with Wilder singling out Riedewald and Joe Rothwell for their contributions in midfield, while reserving special praise for match-winner Bamford.

“The story should be about Pat,” Wilder added. “His hold-up play, his experience, and his performance were outstanding. He keeps getting into the right positions and isn’t afraid to miss. That’s what top strikers do.”
