The Boston Red Sox suffered a 4-0 shutout loss to the New York Yankees in the series opener on Tuesday.
It was a frustrating result for the Red Sox who have been playing better baseball as of late. However, on Tuesday, Boston’s offense struggled and first baseman Willson Contreras believes it’s because they were too aggressive at the plate and didn’t test Luis Gil’s command.
“We were too aggressive against a guy that has a tendency to not be around the strike zone a lot,” Contreras said postgame. “We were too aggressive with pitches a little out of the strike zone, sometimes we missed pitches we wanted. That’s part of the game. But overall, we were too aggressive with a guy that has a tendency to walk people.”
Gil has been known to have command issues, but Boston swung early in the count, which allowed the former Rookie of the Year to have success.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora, meanwhile, echoed Contreras’ comments as he felt like the team swung too much.
