It's hard to keep much better company in Boston Red Sox history than David Ortiz.
And that's who Willson Contreras is hanging out with statistically to begin his Red Sox career.
J.P. Long shared this note on X on Monday:
"Willson Contreras is the first Red Sox player since David Ortiz (2012) to reach base at least 30 times in the team’s first 15 games of a season. Contreras is the first player to reach base 30+ times in his first 15 games as a member of the Red Sox since Kyle Schwarber (2021)."
Big Papi is one of the all-time greats.
Even that early run by Schwarber after the Red Sox got him was special.

And now Contreras, acquired in an offseason trade from the St. Louis Cardinals, already looks right at home.
So far, Contreras is 16-for-53, a .302 average. He has two doubles and three home runs.
Contreras has also walked 11 times to give himself an on-base percentage of .448.
His early-season OPS is .957.
Based on his career production, Contreras will likely regress slightly, but not too much.
At age 33, the Venezuelan star still seems to be in the tail end of his prime, and he appears comfortable at first base for the Red Sox.
Contreras already has one World Series ring. Boston will be hoping that, like Ortiz, Contreras can help the Red Sox to the top of the sport once again.
