Wings prospect Cossa sits on the bench in AHL playoff opener

Detroit Red Wings top prospect Sebastian Cossa sat on the bench in the AHL playoff opener Saturday.

The Grand Rapids Griffins bypassed first-round draft pick Cossa in favor of free agent Michal Postava, who made 22 saves and was named the second star in a 1-0 loss against the Manitoba Moose in Game 1 of the Central Division semifinal at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Moose lead the best-of-five series, 1-0. Game 2 is Sunday in Winnipeg at 3 p.m.

When asked if Cossa would play in Game 2, Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson didn't pick the starter.

"Honestly, I think that in long playoff series, back-to-back nights, both guys have to be ready," Watson said.

"Whether we go back with Michal or Cossa tomorrow, both guys need to be ready at the drop of a hat because these series end pretty quick."

Postava had a shutout until 2:26 left in the third period when Mason Shaw scored on the power play with defenseman Anton Johansson in the penalty box for high sticking.

When asked if he was surprised he got the start in goal, Postava said, "maybe, a little bit."

"I think if Cossa be there or I will be there, we will do the same job," Postava said. "We try to help the team. I think the coach trusts me."
