May 2—SIOUX FALLS — Even in an imperfect performance, Jaxon Day still managed to produce a victory in his best event at the Dakota Relays on Saturday afternoon at Howard Wood Field.
Day, a Winner junior, entered the meet as the top-seeded thrower in a field of 40 competitors, but the path to the top of the podium was anything but smooth.
After fouling on his first two attempts, the junior found himself in a position where he needed a mark on his third and final throw just to qualify for finals. With little room for error, Day uncorked a throw of 174 feet, 11 inches. The mark not only secured his place in the finals but also vaulted him into the top spot on the leaderboard, where he remained for the rest of the competition.
"It's really a blessing, and I am really happy I got the opportunity to compete against all these great throwers," Day said. "After I scratched my first two throws, I was a little nervous, but I knew I had to get something on the board, and I am glad it was my third throw. It's a truly special moment."
That third attempt ultimately stood as the winning throw, and it was Day's only mark of the afternoon. He fouled all three of his attempts in the finals, finishing the day with five fouls in six throws. Still, no one surpassed his winning mark.
"After those first two (throws), I was like, 'Whatever happens, happens,'" Day said. "And I threw it, and it was barely in by about three inches, but I am grateful it made it in and for this opportunity."
Day edged out Grand Forks (N.D.) Central's Lucas Fischer, who placed second with a throw of 171-8. Legend Benedict, Day's teammate, secured third at 168-8, giving the Warriors two of the top three spots on the podium. Elkton-Lake Benton's Taiton Boersma (164-11) and Rapid City Central's Layne Bixby (160-7) rounded out the top five.
Just outside the top-nine finals cutoff, Mitchell's Logan Bessler placed 11th with a throw of 150 feet, 6 inches.
Despite the adversity, Day showed his resilience under pressure when he needed it the most to turn a near-elimination into a championship moment.
"It was really cool to compete against other people from outside of the state," Day said. "Hopefully, this can boost my confidence to end the season as I head into the state meet."
