Wisconsin's men's basketball team lost to No. 12 High Point in the NCAA Tournament, a scenario that might have changed with a proposed 76-team expansion in 2026. The expansion would alter seedings and introduce additional play-in games.
The Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball team suffered a shocking loss in the NCAA Tournament to No. 12 High Point, something that may not have happened with an expanded tournament.
Longtime head coach Greg Gard didn't seem phased by the move, but he provided a typical response without saying much of anything.
USA TODAY's Kevin Skiver ran a report on the 76-team expansion, which notably "would create four No. 12 play-in games, two No. 15s, and four No. 16s."
Skiver added, "12 seeds would be relegated to 13-seeds. Notably, the only non-power adds would be San Diego State and New Mexico."
CBS Sports followed up on this post with their expected seedings. Wisconsin remains No. 5 while High Point did indeed fall to No. 13. The No. 12 seed play-in games included: Oklahoma vs. San Diego State, New Mexico vs. Seton Hall (Wisconsin would've played the winner of this game), Auburn vs. Indiana, and Virginia Tech vs. Stanford.

The proposed changes include expanding the tournament to 76 teams, creating additional play-in games for lower seeds.
With the expansion, Wisconsin's current No. 12 seed would be adjusted to a No. 13 seed.
The only non-power teams expected to join are San Diego State and New Mexico.
