MADISON â Marcus Sedberry has been getting questions from seemingly everyone as the Wisconsin Badgersâ interim AD.
âMy son was asking a whole bunch of questions this week, like, âWhat does this mean, Dad, and how does this work?ââ Sedberry said.
Sedberry has been in charge of the UW athletic department since April 13, when his predecessor, Chris McIntosh, officially announced his resignation to become the Big Tenâs deputy commissioner for strategy â a newly created role.
Sedberry met with reporters â first in a smaller group before a larger availability at the club level of Camp Randall Stadium â for the first time April 23 as interim athletic director aside from his public comments in a UW athletic board meeting.
âThat was a big week, big change,â Sedberry said. âA lot of people with different emotions and all that and just thought it was really important to take care of home base first.â
Here were his answers to four of the many pressing questions facing the Badgers amid the abrupt leadership transition:
The duration of Sedberryâs tenure as interim AD â and the timeline for hiring a permanent replacement â remains one of the biggest question for the Badgers.
âI donât have a clear picture there,â Sedberry said. âAnd if Iâm honest with you, it is better for me to focus on the here and the now. ⊠Whether thatâs going to be three months, a year, whatever thatâs going to be, it would be challenging trying to live in the what-ifs and uncertainty of what that is. I havenât been given explicit direction about what that is, how long that timetable will be.â
Sedberry later said that âI just donât know whatâs going on thereâ as he referenced the lack of search committee or search firm announced.

Sedberry â after previously saying that it would be unwise to pursue âany wholesale shifts or changesâ â said there are not any changes that he has ruled out making for however long that he is in this role.
âI wasnât given the directive to explicitly only make small changes or shifts,â Sedberry said. âThe directive or the opportunity that was put before me was to be our AD right now. And thereâll come a time where maybe that changes, and that time is to be determined. But be our AD because we need somebody to be able to move us forward.â
His previous comments were at a UW athletic board meeting April 15 â two days after UW announced McIntoshâs departure and three days after Sedberry officially signed his offer letter to serve as interim AD.
âI think what I was speaking about last week was acknowledging where we are in the semester, where we are in the fiscal year, where we are as a department,â Sedberry said. âItâs a moment in time and is part of a bigger picture. So I donât believe in making hasty decisions because I donât think thatâs good practice.â

Wisconsin officially announced McIntoshâs departure on April 13 after media reports emerged of the change on April 12. Sedberry said the process was âall pretty quickâ although he did not offer specific details.
âI found out about it once he had formally accepted,â Sedberry said. âAnd it wasnât long after that, had conversations with the chancellor. And it didnât take me long to say, âIâll run through a wall for this place.ââ
Sedberry âcanât remember explicitly daysâ of when those conversations happened, âbut it was pretty quick.â
When pressed on whether it was before or during UW menâs hockeyâs trip to the Frozen Four in Las Vegas, Sedberry said he âcanât tell you exactly when it was.â
âI was in hotel rooms,â Sedberry said.
Whenever Wisconsinâs search for a permanent replacement for McIntosh occurs, Sedberry has not âreally made any types of decisionsâ about seeking the position that he now holds on a temporary basis.
âAt this point, I hadnât really been addressing that with anybody because I just want to focus on what I have right in front of me,â Sedberry said. âThereâs not been a search firm or search committee announced. ⊠I think I have a really good opportunity right now to lead the people that Iâve been entrusted with. And to me, that deserves my 100% focus right now.â
