With LIV Golf's future in question, what happens to team championship?
LIV Golf may be on life support. But what does that mean for its upcoming event in Michigan?
Recent reports shed doubt on the future viability of LIV Golf. Per the report, multiple high-level executives at LIV Golf are searching for new jobs as Saudi Arabia's Private Investment Fund, LIV's primary source of funding, is considering divesting from the league.
Although LIV Golf is still operational – this weekend's tournament in Mexico City appears to be running as usual – experts speculate that the league could shut down midseason if the PIF pulls its funding. And if that were to happen, it could effectively cancel the LIV Golf Team Championship at The Cardinal at Saint John's in Plymouth, Michigan.
LIV first came to Michigan in 2025, when The Cardinal hosted the team championship as the tour's season finale. The Cardinal is still scheduled to host the 2026 Team Championship from Aug. 27-30, with LIV's CEO Scott O'Neil saying the 2026 season will still go "as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle," per a report from ESPN.
However, LIV is reported to have lost over $1 billion since its first season four years ago, leading many experts to speculate whether it can withstand the remainder of the season without PIF money. The PIF has invested over $5 billion into LIV since its inception in 2021.
LIV Golf started competition in 2022 as a rival league to the PGA Tour, attracting dozens of golfers away from the tour with multi-million dollar purses and a brand new format that emphasized team play as well as individual accomplishments. LIV lured golfers like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau from the PGA Tour with exclusivity deals, though Koepka and others had already left LIV to return to the PGA Tour ahead of the 2026 season.
LIV Golf's primary funding source, Saudi Arabia's Private Investment Fund, is considering divesting, raising doubts about the league's future.
If LIV Golf shuts down midseason due to funding issues, the Team Championship in Plymouth, Michigan, could be canceled.
A midseason shutdown of LIV Golf could disrupt ongoing tournaments and impact players' careers and sponsorships.
