Eugenio Suarez's return is underway.
The Cincinnati Reds' designated hitter/infielder returned to the field this week, suiting up to take pre-game grounders and batting practice.
Help is needed.
The Reds, who entered Thursday in last place in the NL Central after leading the division for 22 days, could use an internal boost.
The Reds held a one-game lead over the Chicago Cubs at the start of their current six-game road trip. Following three consecutive walk-off losses at Wrigley Field, they entered Thursday's series finale five games behind the division-leading Cubs (25-12).
In their first six games in May, the Reds (20-17) were outscored by 22 runs.
Suarez (oblique) remains scheduled to undergo an MRI after the team returns to Cincinnati after Thursday's series finale. If he continues to respond to treatments, Suarez could return in the next few weeks, likely after a minor-league rehab assignment.
When the Reds eventually activate Suarez from the 10-day injured list, what will it mean for his replacement, Nathaniel Lowe?
Is there room for both on the Reds' roster?
Signed to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training last winter, Lowe earned an opportunity to fill in for Suarez. He started quickly, connecting on a walk-off homer against the Detroit Tigers on April 24. He was a replacement for late-scratch Suarez.
During Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the host Cubs, the 30-year-old went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his sixth.
In his initial 52 at-bats this season, Lowe hit .288 with nine extra-base hits, 12 RBI and seven walks. The eight-year major leaguer remains one of he most likely players to be traded this summer.
A free-agent at the end of the season, Lowe is affordable, playing on a "prove-it," one-year, $1.75-million deal. With rookie Sal Stewart and Elly De La Cruz emerging as the team's offensive core, the Reds could secure a mid-tier prospect for Lowe, while his stock remains high.
